UAE Visa Overstay Fines: A Complete Guide to Penalties, Payment, and Exit (2026)

What Happens When You Overstay Your UAE Visa?

Staying in the UAE beyond the validity of your visa is a violation of UAE Residency Law and results in daily financial penalties. These fines accumulate every single day until you exit the country or legally change your status. The longer you stay, the larger the amount you owe — and fines must be settled in full before you can leave the UAE.

Whether you hold a tourist visa, a visit visa, or had a residency visa that was cancelled, the moment your authorized period of stay expires and you remain in the country, the clock starts ticking. Fines are standardized across the UAE, though the administrative procedures for settling them may vary slightly between Dubai (GDRFA) and other emirates (ICP).

It is important to understand that immigration officials at the airport will calculate and collect any outstanding fines when you attempt to leave. You cannot depart the UAE with unpaid visa fines.

The Fine Structure (2026)

For tourist and visit visa holders, the penalty structure works as follows once your grace period (if applicable) expires:

AED 200
First day of overstay
Flat entry fee
AED 100
Every subsequent day
Daily accumulation

Example Fine Calculations:

1 dayAED 200
7 daysAED 800
30 daysAED 3,100
60 daysAED 6,100
90 daysAED 9,100
Additional service fees (typically AED 100) may be charged by typing centers or immigration offices when processing the fine payment. Always confirm the total amount before paying.

Grace Periods: Do You Get Extra Time?

Grace periods are additional windows of time that allow you to stay legally in the UAE after a specific event — such as the cancellation of your residency visa — without incurring fines. Understanding whether you have a grace period is crucial.

Cancelled Residency Visa

When your UAE residency visa is cancelled (by your employer or yourself), you typically receive a 30-day grace period to either leave the country, find a new sponsor, or change your visa status. Fines only start after this grace period expires.

Tourist & Visit Visas

Standard tourist visas (30-day or 60-day) typically do not come with a grace period after expiry. The fine begins from the first day after the visa's stamped expiry date.

Visa on Arrival

Citizens of many countries receive a visa on arrival valid for 30 or 90 days. There is typically no grace period — fines start immediately after the visa expires.

Expired Residency Visa (Still in UAE)

If your residency visa has expired but was not formally cancelled, the 30-day grace period still applies from the date of expiry. Beyond that, standard overstay fines accumulate.

How to Pay Visa Overstay Fines

You have several options for settling visa fines before departing the UAE. It is strongly recommended to clear fines before arriving at the airport to avoid unexpected delays or complications at immigration.

Online (Dubai)

Visit the GDRFA Dubai website (gdrfad.gov.ae) or use the GDRFA Dubai mobile app. You can check your fine status and pay directly online.

Online (Other Emirates)

Use the ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security) website or smart app at icp.gov.ae to check and pay fines.

Amer Centers (Dubai)

Walk-in centers across Dubai that handle immigration services, including fine payment. Find locations at dubai.gov.ae.

Typing Centers

Government-approved typing centers can process fine payments. Note that they typically charge a small service fee on top of the fine amount.

Possible Waivers and Exemptions

In limited circumstances, the ICP or GDRFA may grant a fine waiver. These are not guaranteed and require documented proof. Common cases where waivers have been granted include:

  • Medical Emergencies: If you were hospitalized or medically unable to travel, a doctor's certificate from a UAE-licensed hospital may support a waiver request.
  • Flight Cancellations / Natural Disasters: If your departure was prevented by documented circumstances beyond your control (airline cancellation, UAE airport closure), authorities have historically shown flexibility.
  • Minors: During periodic amnesty programs, fines for children have sometimes been reduced or waived. Check current GDRFA or ICP announcements.
  • Official Amnesty Periods: The UAE government occasionally announces visa amnesty periods allowing overstayers to regularize their status or exit without paying full fines. These are announced on official government channels.

Consequences Beyond the Fine

Financial fines are not the only consequence of overstaying. Depending on the severity and duration of the overstay, you may also face:

Entry Bans: Significant overstays can result in a ban from re-entering the UAE for periods ranging from 6 months to several years.
Deportation Record: If fines are not paid and you are apprehended, you may be formally deported, which creates a permanent record that can affect future visa applications not only to the UAE but to other countries.
Legal Action: In rare cases involving very long overstays, authorities may pursue legal action before allowing departure.

Real Situations We Have Seen

Case: David, 47 days overstay after job loss
David was made redundant and assumed he had 30 days to leave. His visa grace period actually expired 30 days after the visa cancellation date — not 30 days after his last working day. By the time he realised, he was 17 days into overstay. Final fine: AED 200 + (46 × AED 100) = AED 4,800, plus AED 100 service fee at the Amer centre. He paid at GDRFA before the airport and had no issues at immigration.
Case: Aisha, tourist visa expired while waiting for employment visa
Aisha entered on a tourist visa while her employer processed her work permit. The process took longer than expected and she overstayed by 12 days. Fine: AED 200 + (11 × AED 100) = AED 1,300. Her employer covered the fine as it was caused by delays on their end — she got this agreed in writing before her visa was processed, which we always recommend doing if you are in a similar situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pay overstay fines at the airport?

Yes, but it can cause delays and stress at departure. It is much better to pay at an Amer centre or online via ICP/GDRFA before you travel so your exit goes smoothly.

Will I be banned from re-entering UAE after overstay?

Not automatically. Short overstays that are paid in full typically do not result in a ban. Long overstays (several months or more) can result in an entry ban, but this is decided case by case by immigration.

Does UAE ever waive overstay fines?

Occasionally, during official amnesty programs announced by the UAE government — usually around national holidays or Eid. These are not guaranteed and cannot be predicted. Outside of amnesty, fines are generally not waived.
